Sweetheart (Tamil with English Subtitles) - Victory Cinema Exclusive A Heartfelt Journey Through Love, Fear, and Responsibility Sweetheart brings to Victory Cinema's screen a deeply emotional yet humorous exploration of modern relationships, directed by debutant filmmaker Swineeth S. Sukumar. This Tamil-language romantic comedy, produced by composer Yuvan Shankar Raja under his YSR Films banner, delves into the complexities of commitment, personal trauma, and unexpected life changes that challenge our perceptions of love and responsibility. The Story Vasu, a talented animator with a complicated past, must confront his commitment issues when his partner Manu announces she is pregnant. As he navigates his fears and emotions, he embarks on an emotional yet humorous journey of self-discovery, love, and responsibility. At its heart, Sweetheart examines the collision of two fundamentally different worldviews. Vasu, played by Rio Raj, grows up with bitter childhood memories that leave him disillusioned about love, marriage, and family life. He avoids commitment and sees relationships as temporary. Manu, portrayed by Gopika Ramesh, is the complete opposite. She believes in love, dreams of marriage, and wants children. Despite their differences, they start a relationship. For Manu, it's love. For Vasu, it's casual. Their mismatched expectations lead to arguments and a breakup. Things take a turn when Manu discovers she's pregnant, and this unexpected twist forces them to reconnect. Therefore, they must face their past choices and decide how to move forward. As they deal with this new challenge, the story explores whether love can overcome deep-rooted fears and misunderstandings. What makes Sweetheart particularly poignant is its exploration of generational trauma. Vasu, having lost his mother to remarriage when he was just a toddler, finds himself unprepared for the commitments of marriage and relationships. When Manu raises the topic of marriage, Vasu draws a parallel between her behavior and that of his mother, revealing how our earliest experiences shape our capacity to love and trust. The Cast Sweetheart brings together a talented ensemble cast led by two promising performers: The film features Rio Raj in the lead role as Vasu, alongside Gopika Ramesh, who plays Manu.Their chemistry drives the narrative and brings authenticity to the complex emotions explored throughout the film. Rio Raj, known for his work in television and films like Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja (2019), brings depth to the role of Vasu. The character played by Rio Raj is an emotionally conflicted animator haunted by his fear of commitment and the prospect of fatherhood. He gives a sympathetic performance, skillfully communicating Vasu's anxiety, confusion, and periodic immaturity. Despite the limitations of the writing, Rio imbues his character's emotional journey with enough innate charm and earnestness that it becomes somewhat relatable.Gopika Ramesh is effulgent as Manu; her performance is imbued with warmth and grit. As Manu's personal struggles, including her relationship with her parents, unfold, she plays them with sensitivity, imbuing her character with vulnerability and strength. Gopika Ramesh was previously seen in films like Dragon (2025) and Identity (2025), making Sweetheart another significant addition to her growing filmography. The supporting cast enhances the narrative with their compelling performances: The supporting cast includes Renji Panicker as none other than Manu's father, Arunachaleswaran Pa plays Vasu's friend, and Tulasi plays Vasu's mother. Kavitha appears as Manu's aunt, Fouziee as Manu's friend, and Suresh Chakravarthy as Manu's uncle. Aashik Gopinath plays Manu's fiancé, while Reshmi Karthigeyan portrays Vasu's sister. The Creative Team Sweetheart marks the directorial debut of Swineeth S. Sukumar, who also wrote the screenplay. The film represents Yuvan Shankar Raja's fourth production venture after Pyaar Prema Kaadhal (2018), Maamanithan (2022) and Pon Ondru Kanden (2024), demonstrating his commitment to supporting fresh voices in Tamil cinema. The film boasts an impressive technical team: The film is produced by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who also composed the music. The film's cinematography is handled by Balaji Subramanyam, while the editing is done by Tamil Arasan. The Music A Yuvan Shankar Raja soundtrack always brings something special to a film, and Sweetheart is no exception. Sweetheart! provides a raucous, colorful soundtrack, largely by Yuvan Shankar Raja, that mixes moods to complement the movie's playful tone. The album features several memorable tracks: The album begins with "Paint Ball," a catchy, frenetic song co-written and performed by MC Sanna. It launches the soundtrack to life with a burst of youthful energy. Next up is the soulful "Amma Song" written by Rio Raj and sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Sai Vignesh. Brief but poignant, it introduces a gentler emotional underpinning early on."Kadhavai Thirandhaye" adds a melodic, romantic touch to the album, set to lyrics by Madhan Karky and sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Sinduri Vishal. "Awsum Kissa," with music by Yuvan and OfRo, and lyrics by Kelithee and Gana Francis, has a quirky, spunky feel that maintains a light and contemporary atmosphere. The album wraps up with "Torture Pro Max", a bouncy fusion number featuring Yuvan, Arivu, and Tanvi Shah. Its blend of rap and melody makes a bracing conclusion to the soundtrack. The seven songs run just under 20 minutes altogether, making for a concise but rich listening session that reflects the youthful energy of Sweetheart!.Yuvan Shankar Raja is, of course, no stranger to creating memorable film scores. He got his breakthrough with the Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) soundtrack, and established himself as one of Tamil cinema's most sought-after composers by the mid-2000s. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil in 2004 for his score in the drama 7G Rainbow Colony. In 2006, he became the only Indian composer to win the Cyprus International Film Festival Award for the soundtrack of Raam. He also won the Filmfare Special Award – South in 2009 for his Telugu musical Oy!. In 2015, Yuvan created his own music label, U1 Records and in 2017, he started his own film production studio, YSR Films. The Visual Experience Cinematographer Balaji Subramaniam delivers vibrant and visually appealing romantic and song sequences, enhancing the film's youthful vibe. The visual storytelling complements the emotional journey of the characters, with thoughtful framing and lighting choices that reflect their inner states.
