Odin The film's other lead is a dog. Odin, the combat German Shepherd at the centre of the story, is played by four real dogs, Uber, Seeka, Ryker and Hondo, who share the role. For anyone who has loved a dog, Odin is the reason to see this film. For anyone who has worked alongside one, the film's understanding of that partnership will ring true. A word of honest guidance for dog lovers: the film puts Odin in real peril. There are wolf attacks and a bear encounter. Most viewers will find it moving rather than upsetting, but if animals in danger are hard for you to watch, it is worth knowing in advance. Brad Pitt and David Ayer, together again Brad Pitt and David Ayer last worked together on Fury, the Second World War tank drama. Heart of the Beast reunites them for a very different kind of fight. Ayer, who wrote Training Day and directed End of Watch, has always been at his best with men under pressure and the loyalties that hold them together. Here the loyalty runs between a man and his dog, and the pressure comes from nature itself. Pitt carries most of the film alone, with only Odin for company. It is a physical, largely wordless performance, and much of it plays out in the actor's face and body as James is pushed further than he thought he could go. Pitt also serves as one of the film's producers. J.K. Simmons plays Watkins and Anna Lambe plays Amber. The craft Mauro Fiore, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer of Avatar, shot the film. The Alaskan wilderness was recreated in the mountains and lakes around Queenstown, New Zealand, where the production filmed in 2025. The landscapes are vast and beautiful, and also the enemy: every river crossing and every ridge is another obstacle between James and home. The score is by Jared Michael Fry and the film was edited by Dody Dorn. At 101 minutes, Heart of the Beast is lean and tightly told. There is no wasted time between the crash and the long walk out.
